Get a grip on allergies without using drugs

Spring means warm weather, new life...and allergies.

Are there natural remedies that actually work? Yes, but because each natural remedy works by helping the body balance in certain areas, not all solutions will work for all people.

It depends on what your body needs to heal itself at this particular time. Don’t expect them to work immediately, like a pharmaceutical drug. Drugs work by blocking enzymes.

Natural remedies work with the body to affect repair. Some are very quick to relieve symptoms while others take more time.

Things to eat

Make lots of dishes that feature onions and garlic. They contain quercetin and this inhibits inflammatory reactions. Although it does work once the allergies start, it’s better used as a preventive. if you add them to your diet before spring, you may not need anything else.

Horseradish and wasabi (Japanese horseradish served with sushi) will not only open the sinuses but may help to keep them open if eaten regularly.

Reishi mushrooms are non-toxic and can be obtained fresh or as a supplement. They inhibit many chemicals responsible for allergy symptoms including histamine.

Stinging Nettle

If you are fortunate enough to live in an area where nettles are abundant, pick some early in the spring and make salads from the new shoots. You can also stir fry them lightly like baby spinach. Nettle can also be taken as a tea or in a capsule. Both the leaves and root are used in preparations and many find it as effective as conventional medicine. Bonus: it’s excellent for the prostate, for balancing women’s hormones and much more.

Butterbur

There are clinical trials supporting the efficacy of butterbur for the prevention of migraines but it is also being used successfully to treat headaches and asthma. Butterbur contains liver toxins that must be removed prior to consumption. Never take it from the shrub. The extract should be taken only when processed as an approved supplement.

Nasal Inhalers

Saline works wonders. Try mixing up your own solution with 2 cups of purified water and 1 teaspoon of sea salt and using it in a little misting squeeze bottle. Make sure the bottle is sterile and use it several times a day, just as you would any nasal spray.

Nasal Rinsing

Using the same salt to water ratio as the spray, rinse the nasal passages twice a day with the solution using a little pot or nasal syringe.

Himalayan Salt Inhaler

This creates a salt air bath and has a very positive effect on asthma, allergies, bronchitis, colds and irritation caused by environmental pollution. No mixing. Just add the chunky pink salt to the chamber and inhale the air. Even though it sounds almost too simple to be true, it has some hard science behind it and is fast becoming the most popular solution for many kinds of respiratory issues.

I'm always interested in meeting new people and hearing how these remedies work for you so let me know!

A very good hub!

Honey is also good for hayfever type allergies.

Did you also know that if your children grow up with a cat and dog in the house they will have less allergies?

Thank you, magnoliazz - and no, I didn't know that about cats and dogs but it does make sense. I can't imagine a home without animals :-)

Thank you SilverGenes - I live in a city where allergies abound probably because it was meant to be a bicycle town in the hills and has grown out of proportion to a concrete jungle. I've found that saline nasal sprays work wonders and we do add Himalayan rock salt to certain recipes and they help. I've found that mustard helps a great deal too.

Hi Shalini - thanks for dropping by. How do you use the mustard?

Great tips! I'm allergic to dust mites. Ugh.

SilverGenes profile image

SilverGenes Hub Author 22 months ago

You are not alone. The best thing I've seen in years for dust mite control is the new silver technology in mattress and pillow covers. Silver kills mold, mildew, bacteria, fungus, and dust mites! You can't tell there's anything different about the covers because it's woven right into the fabric, not like those horrid plastic covers. You might want to give that a try. Thanks for stopping by and commenting :)

How about Adrenaline? Is it used in Allergic reactions?

SilverGenes profile image

SilverGenes Hub Author 15 months ago

Yes, it is. However, it isn't what would be classified as a natural remedy. Adrenaline is a hormone produced by the body and in the case of severe allergies, it is available in a pharmaceutical form to prevent and treat anaphylaxis. Adrenaline is also known as epinephrine and is often prescribed as an Epipen to be carried by those who are known to be high risk. People who are allergic to beestings or certain foods can have only minutes and that's when adrenaline is a lifesaver.

I much prefer natural remedies to over the counter or prescriptions and they are better for us.

SilverGenes profile image

SilverGenes Hub Author 14 months ago

Hi Pamela - I completely agree. Give the body what it needs and it can repair itself in most case. Thanks for stopping by!

Thank you for such a perfect hub for me (not that you wrote it for me, ) l ´ve never suffered with any allergies till l came back to live in England after 20 yrs away. It seems all the virus jumped on ´the new girl´´ So l have a new problem, and you have given me some solutions. Cheers.!

SilverGenes profile image

SilverGenes Hub Author 12 months ago

Hi Dim! I find the salt inhaler works wonders but it depends on the cause of the allergy and it's different for each of us. I do know that anecdotally, sea air has 'cured' all manner of things and there is probably some solid science hidden away in that folk wisdom. Thank you for the good words :)
